The Shaduf of El-Siliyien: Documenting a Rare Survivor of Water-Lifting Practice in Fayoum

Studying and understanding Fayoum's water heritage highlights the need to record and preserve the remaining elements of traditional water-lifting technology in Fayoum. Hidden among the agricultural fields of El Siliyien village in Fayoum is a forgotten and abandoned Shaduf representing a rare and undocumented example of a water-lifting device in Fayoum. The paper documents this surviving traditional Shaduf through field investigation and examinations of historical maps. It combines field documentation, photographic recording, local oral testimonies, and an analysis of the Shaduf’s components with previously documented ones to identify its characteristics, construction, and place among Fayoum traditional water-lifting technology.
